Round 6. 12th & 19th December 2009

At Hewett Oval

Coromandel vs Keswick

First Day

A half century from the blade of Sam Cheek has rescued the 1st XI from early trouble against Keswick. Sent in to bat at Hewett Oval, Darren Coulter's team lost three early wickets before Cheek (63 from 92 balls) and Josh Lourens (27) added 79 for the fourth wicket. Unfortunately the last seven wickets only added another 49 leaving a total of 166 and the prospect of a hard day at the office next week with Keswick already 34 without loss.

Coromandel II vs Sheidow Park III

First Day

The 2nd XI have bowled Sheidow Park III out for just 67. A fine effort on the odd shaped Happy Valley Primary School (with its wide square, and extremely short straight, boundaries). It is Sheidow Park's second lowest score against Coromandel - in any grade.
Adam Catford finished with the best figures of 3 for 10 while Jarrod McCauley strengthened his grip on the bowling trophy with another two wickets. Tim Kaethner continued his brilliance in the field - another three catches increasing his season tally to five.
In reply, captain Darren Cheek led the way with an unbeaten 40 allowing him to declare the innings at 1 for 72 after only 13 overs. He will be striving for an equally impressive performance in the field next week as his unbeaten team seek their second outright win for the season.

On a statistical note:
Sheidow Park's lowest score against Coromandel (in any grade) is
58 against our 3rd XI at Blackwood Hill Oval in 2000.

Coromandel III vs St George II

First Day

The undefeated 3rd XI commence their round six clash with St George - aiming to be undefeated at Christmas.
Captain Mike "Wang Wang" Maclean won the toss (the only Coromandel captain to achieve this today) and "inserted" the opposition.
It is rare for the standout bowling performance to contain no wickets, but this was the case today as Graham "Chum" Carpenter returned the extraordinarily economical bowling analysis of 15 overs for only eight runs.
While Chum was keeping it tight for the 3rd XI at one end, Will Hillier continued to wreak havoc at the other. His 4 wickets for 30 runs has propelled him to 31 wickets for the season - just three short of the all-time record for the most before Christmas! Thomas Bird and Andrew "Sarah" Ferguson also chipped in with two wickets each.

On a statistical note:
Graham's eight runs from 15 overs has set a few interesting club records:

Furthermore after 13.5 overs he had conceded only two runs. He was clearly becoming expensive with six runs taken from his last seven balls (which included a wide!)

St George 180 (Hillier 4/30, Ferguson 2/15, Bird 2/53, McManus 1/42, G.Carpenter 0/8 off 15 overs)

Coromandel IV vs ICC Sharks V

First Day

The 4th XI are locked in a tight contest with ICC Sharks V after batting out the 60 overs for the day and finishing at 8 for 138.
Scoring was never easy on the well grassed outfield of Blackwood Hill Oval and against some tight swing bowling - only 14 runs had been scored from 15 overs when the first drinks break was taken.
The curse of the full toss continues to haunt Richard Hunter - caught at mid on from the first ball after drinks.
Ben Murphy increased the scoring rate with 27 from 38 balls and shared a partnership of 38 for the fourth wicket with Ben Kernich. However a late order collapse after tea saw the score fall to 8/92 with still 16 overs left for the day.
A captain's innings was required, and skipper Greg Kearsley obliged. Batting at a very conservative number 9, he dominated the scoring in an unbroken ninth wicket stand of 46 with David Billett. Kearsley's 33 included an all-run four from the last ball of the innings. It was a relief that the innings had ended - as both batsmen needed several hours to catch their breath.

Coromandel 8/138 (Kearsley 33*, B.Murphy 27, B.Carpenter 14, J.Cheek 14)
