Coromandel claims its first ever 1st XI outright win against Plympton Footballers.
At Plympton OvalN.A.C.A. vote for captain Mark Eglinton - declaring with Tristan Graham on 49 not out.
Plympton 109 (McCormick 2/16, Graham 2/16, P. Magarey 2/19, King 2/21)
Coromandel commenced the second day having already claimed the first innings points the week before.
Plympton resumed their second innings at 1/23, however with Jeremy McCormick and Russell King spearheading the attack, it was only minutes before Plympton had crashed to 4/28. King collected his first five wicket haul for the club, while wicket-keeper Adrian Rowles took five catches: equalling Tim Hanna's match total of nine against Coromandel Ramblers two years ago.
Set a victory target of 159 from 25 overs, Coromandel made the ideal start with 23 runs scored from the first over. Paul Magarey (57 not out from 59 balls) and King (50 from 25) extended their opening partnership to 88 from only 51 balls, the required run-rate dropping to a mere four runs an over. Assisted with some late hitting from Tristan Graham (17 off 8 balls), Coromandel reached their target in the 21st over.
On a statistical note:
This is their second outright win this season, a notable statistic given that there had not been an outright win by Coromandel for eight years at this level. Incidentally, the last season in which the 1st XI won two matches outright was 1971/72.
Regarding the 23 runs scored from the first over:
While begin far from a club record for any over, it is the most scored from the first over of an innings - at least since 1944.
The analysis of the over reads (Magarey) 1 (King) 46444.
King's 50 was scored from 24 balls and is possibly the fastest in the history of 1st XI matches at Coromandel.
A significant day for club "legend" Andrew Magarey - reaching the 4500 run milestone. Also, a historical occasion for Ben Eames - his first golden duck for the club.
