Day One
Round 9, 2000/01 was a highlight in the career of veteran Peter Zacpal, his 300th match for the Coromandel Cricket Club after having made his debut in the season of 1968/69.
With son Simon already having established himself as a permanent player in Dad's team,
wife
and daughter
were also present to complete the family occasion, and with the Zacpal "movie camera" on hand the sentimental moment was captured forever.
The day began with a photo session for Zac with the Hills Messenger,
and despite the matting on the pitch having been prepared by enthusiastic team-mates by 1pm, play did not commence until 1:40.
With an outright win imperative to their chances of contesting the finals for the first time since 1992/93, the Coromandel C Grade had an ideal opportunity against a side struggling to field a full team in recent matches.
"Hoping" to bowl first, captain Scott Sims' plans were thrown into disarray after he lost his third consecutive toss at Blackwood Hill Oval and Coromandel were asked to bat first.
The strategy now was to score runs quickly, declare with a score of around 200 by 4pm and provide the bowlers with plenty of time to dismiss the opposition twice.
After an opening partnership of 49 in 38 minutes between Sims and Greg Kearsley, the dismissal of Kerz for 12 triggered a collapse of 4/35. The collapse included the first ball dismissal of Richard Hunter, whose eyes lit up at the sight of a friendly full toss from a slow bowler, and he obliged by placing the ball straight into the hands of the mid-on fieldsman.
A captain's innings was needed, and through the carnage Sims produced his second half-century for the season.
After another exhibition of powerful hitting, he was bowled for a career highest score of 80, scored from 73 balls in 104 minutes and including one six and 11 fours. He was well supported by Brian "Denno" Dennison whose score of 58 from 54 balls was his 11th career half-century and upon reaching 10, passed the milestone of 2000 runs for Coromandel.
