Round 8. 22nd - 29th January

At Kellett Reserve

A Grade vs Morphettville Park

Day One

Another day of punishment for Eggy's team, this time at the hands of Morphettville Park.

The only highlight of the day, David Magarey finally broke his drought of wickets. Before saturday, his last wicket had been taken during round 3 against Coromandel Ramblers.
During the drought, "Maj" conceded 248 runs - quite possibly a club record. The statistician has not found a more expensive interval between wickets, over all matches played since 1961/62.

Day Two

Despite being unsuccessful in the run chase, Coromandel produced one of its most competitive batting displays in recent weeks.

New opening pair Andrew Langmaid and Damien Trus commenced the chase with solid partnership of 28 runs, however the wicket of Langmaid triggered a collapse of 5/39 which included the dismissal of Darren Cheek for his fourth duck of the season (surely this must attract N.A.C.A. Votes!!).

With the score 5/67 and a required run rate of nearly seven runs per over, Coromandel needed a miracle and it seemed to have arrived in the form of captain Mark Eglinton and part-time cricketer Andrew Alderson as both scored half centuries in a partnership of 93 runs from just 12 overs

Aldo struck a swash-buckling 60 runs from just 37 balls which included 6 sixes and 3 fours. Three sixes were scored from consecutive deliveries as part of his contribution of 22 runs to one over, a single to Egg and two byes taking the tally for the over to 25 runs.
In contrast, Egg was more subdued, requiring 84 balls to reach the half-century and when finally dismissed for 60 he had faced 94 balls and hit 5 fours.

C Grade vs Sheidow Park II

Day One

After batting first on a small ground, the C Grade utilised the conditions to post a competitive score of 212.

The highlight of the day was a much awaited return to form by Wayne "Blarney" Gebert who top scored with a well compiled 61 off 135 balls. The innings included 10 fours and yes, you guessed it, NO SIXES.
From all accounts, the size of the ground suggested that this was to be Blarney's best chance to remove that 0 from the sixes column in Career Scoring Shots.
For anyone who is wondering, this is not a record number of fours in an innings for Blarney. That record was achieved during his famous innings of 99 at Kenilworth oval on 25th February 1989. He hit 12 fours.

Blarney received strong support from "The Chef" Will Hillier who unleashed the batting potential that had been evident from his promising form in the nets with a blistering 46 of just 59 balls with 5 fours and a six.

Another highlight of historical significance was the batting milestone achieved by the old warhorse Peter Zacpal. "Zac" continued his recent return to form with the bat to contribute another useful score of 16 and in the process pass 1500 career runs.

D Grade vs ICC Sharks IV

Day One

Can I just describe the artful, cunning piece of bowling by the master craftsman Matthew Bubner. Last over of the day: well flighted delivery with bit of drift, bit of loop and grip off the pitch, mesmerizes the batsman who is beaten in flight, fails to roll the wrists over a cut shot, magnificent right handed catch at gully by the 171 game veteran Rowan Lloyd.

Despite the contribution by young Matthew James Bubner, the D Grade were unable to prevent a First Innings Loss before the end of play on day one.

This day also heralded the career of future club champion Sam Cheek. Sam was making his debut for Coromandel and should have had his first career wicket from his second ball, except for the efforts of a "poor excuse for a cricketer" fielding at mid-on who should probably devote more time to maintaining web pages rather than

Need I say more?
