C Grade vs Plympton Footballers III

After winning his fifth consecutive toss (so he says!) and "inserting" the opposition into the field, Mike "Kiwi" Maclean and Co. put their heads down and set their sights on batting all day. For 60 overs they maintained a run rate of around 3 runs per over: a reasonable effort considering the large boundaries of Blackwood Hill Oval.

Kiwi led the way with a fine of innings of 36. The innings included 4 fours and 5 threes and is his highest score as captain and fourth highest career score. His innings continued the good start made by Mike Matthews who scored 29.

A middle order collapse saw the loss of 7 wickets for 45 leaving the home side at 9/134. Enter 287 game veteran Peter Zacpal who was due for a good score given that he had not reached double figures since 17th January 1998. Well, the great man made up for lost time on Saturday and together with first season player Ben Sellick, shared a last wicket stand of 47 to give respectability to the innings. The 33 scored by "Zac" was his fifth highest career score and seventh score of over 30.

Coromandel's bowlers were then left with three overs in which to wreak havoc on the opposition batsmen. Greg Kearsley wasted no time, bowling the #2 batsman with his third delivery. At 1/15, 182 should be a more than competitive target for Plympton.

First Innings Win

Coromandel 181 (Maclean 36, Zacpal 33, Matthews 29)
Plympton Footballers 151 (Kearsley 3/34, Ferguson 2/8, Hillier 2/28, Zacpal 2/53) Scoreboard
At Kenilworth No.2 Oval

D Grade vs Kenilworth IV

At the toss, Mark Lemmey called successfully, and with full support from his team mates, elected to take advantage of a fine day and bat first.

The innings was off to a disastrous start however and before long the score was 4/37. Second game player Nick Raymond then joined Peter "Pike" Griffin at the crease and the two provided a much needed steadying partnership to take the score to 100 before Pike was the victim of a questionable LBW decision given by a team mate who shall remain nameless.

Nick continued on to reach a half century but his dismissal saw a collapse leave Coromandel at 9/122 with 15 overs still to be bowled in the day. Angus Magarey then joined Jarrad Sim at the crease and survived 15 deliveries, providing the necessary support to allow "Simmy" to push the score up to 140.

With six overs to bowl to the Kenilworth batsmen, only one wicket was taken, and this was considered to be a "nothing" wicket given the player was unavailable for the second week. Still, the D Grade have probably their best chance this season to push for a first innings win.

On a statistical note, Pike scored 28 runs before scoring his first boundary. His only other score at this ground was 21 in 1985/86, and the innings was composed entirely of singles. Not surprising, that still remains the highest score consisting entirely of singles in the last 38 years (possibly more!).

First Innings Loss

Coromandel 140 (Raymond 51, Griffin 35)
Kenilworth 3/163 (Griffin 1/34) Scoreboard
