Round 5. 4th December
December 4th 1999 will remembered as a dark day for the Coromandel Cricket Club with all four grades experiencing the agony of defeat. The B Grade were the only side to threaten the opposition but still fell short by 2 runs.

A Grade vs Warradale
After losing the toss and being sent out to field, Coromandel looked in trouble early as the Warradale openers put on 60 runs in 10 overs for the first wicket and, despite Chris Lay snaring two quick wickets in two overs, the slaughter continued as the opposition batsmen struck 8 sixes for the innings and amassed a score of 190 from 37 overs.
On a more positive note, Chris Lay took a magnificent one-handed low catch at deep square leg:- ask him for the story, I haven't heard too much yet.
Requiring 191 to win at over 5 runs an over, Ken Rowe was assigned the "Adam Gilchrist" role as one-day opener and joined "The President" Mark Wicks to commence the innings. Unfortunately, the chase was off to a disastrous start with Wicksy caught behind in the first over,
and despite Tim Hanna and Ken's second wicket recovery which saw the run-rate remain steady at 4 runs per over, a middle order collapse left the home side at 6/50 after 16 overs.
Captain Mark Eglinton and Damien Trus staged a slight recovery with a 7th wicket partnership of 41 however the required run-rate was rising above 7 runs per over.
On a statistical note, former captain Darren Cheek scored his third duck in as many matches. As well as maintaining his position as equal leader in the duck award, he has equalled his own record for the most ducks in a season, achieved during the season of 1985/86 while playing in the C Grade.
