First Innings Loss
Coromandel 91 (T. Hanna 28, D. Trus 14, M. Wicks 13)Captain Andrew Magarey won his third toss out of four for the season and on a lightning fast outfield sent the opposition in to bat.
Keswick were looking very comfortable early on at 0/64 after 16 overs before Magarey, the master tactician, introduced Chris "Wally" Wallace into the bowling attack. The move had immediate results with a wicket in his first over after a catch by Mike Matthews at third man. Chris was rewarded with another over and proceeded to take three more wickets before drinks (one a sensational catch in a swirling breeze by Tim Kaethner) and have Coromandel back in the game with the score 5/138 in the 33rd over.
A good start after drinks. Grant "Grunter" Wannan was introduced into the attack and produced a false stroke from the batsman and Wayne Gebert (pulled out of a temporary retirement to play this match) showed he has lost none of his poise in the field with a magnificent running catch at backward square leg. Another wicket to Wally, his fifth, and the score was 7/170.
What followed however was the frustration of a wagging tail with number 8 and 9 batsmen taking advantage of the relatively short boundaries and fast outfield. Despite the onslaught, Wannan continued to bowl tightly and Andrew Magarey took a magnificent running catch on the boundary at long on.
Keswick managed to set an imposing target with a score of 296, however with a fast outfield this is far from an impossible task, the batsman receiving full value for their shots.
On a statistical note, Chris returned his career best bowling figures of 5/57, his previous best being 3/14, and Grunter's 4/64 was the 7th time he has taken four wickets in an innings.
Milestones. P. Rathjen 1029 runs. 1000 runs and 100 wicket double.
First Innings Loss
Keswick 296 (C. Wallace 5/57, G. Wannan 4/64)After winning the toss and inserting the opposition into the field, the C Grade recovered from the early loss of captain "Kiwi" Maclean to post a more than competitive score.
Simon Johnson, who finally appears to be committing himself to a full season with Coromandel, hit a career best 55. The innings including three sixes, the third taking his score from 46 to 52, quite an achievement on the large boundaries of Blackwood Hill Oval. In fact there have been only 11 individual innings played at Blackwood Hill in which more than 3 sixes have been scored. Simon shared a second wicket partnership of 101 for the second wicket with reigning club champion Greg Kearsley who batted all day for an unbeaten 87.
The finishing touches were put to the innings with a fine 42 by Rob Morley who is playing his first game for the season. His innings included 7 fours.
Special mention for Scott Sims who scored 13*: his highest score for the club since 6th December 1997 and only the third time he has achieved the red inks (finished not out) in a career spanning 51 innings.
Hillier had 1/0 after 4 overs.
Ferguson a wicket with his first ball.
