Coromandel winners once again.

Coromandel has surged back returned to the winners' list as the 1st XI and 2nd XI celebrated narrow victories, by one wicket and six runs respectively.
The 1st XI staged a remarkable revival at Hewett Oval.
The target of 168 seemed a mere formality with the short square boundaries against a bowling attack that has struggled in recent seasons. However the task was given a different perspective as the home team crashed to 8/94 in the 43rd over.
Having previously scored 60 batting at number 10, Tristan Graham strode to the wicket for the first time this season, to join 190-game veteran Andrew Magarey who had commenced his innings only minutes earlier. Continued ...

Grand-Final for the 5th XI.

Rowan Lloyd's "E" grade have successfully defended a first innings total of 97, against North Haven III at the North Haven Football Club.
Max Cheek bowled unchanged through his maximum 15 overs, claiming the match winning figures of 4/14. Luke Harrip continues to trouble the batsman with controlled flight and leg spin, 3/32 from 12.2 overs. In a surprise move by the captain after tea (thought by many on the field to be a joke) Richard Stewart was introduced into the attack to bowl his left arm tweakers and secured two vital breakthroughs.
The 5th XI advance to their second grand final since the reintroduction of the team in 2002/03.
Coromandel's opponent will be Coromandel Ramblers IV, who narrowly beat Sheidow Park V in the other semi final. The venue is to be Weymouth Oval. Full scores

Langmaid stars in monumental run chase.

An opening partnership of 193 between Andrew Langmaid (107) and Sam Cheek (87) provided the foundation for a Post World War II club record for the highest successful run-chase - over all grades.
What a difference a week makes: only last week captain Matt Laming described his team's bowling and fielding performance as the most disappointing of the season, when ICC Sharks compiled 9/315: their highest total in the last five years. Now Laming's team are overflowing with enthusiasm, on the eve of their semi-final against nemesis Western Youth Centre at Hewett Oval.
It was Langmaid's fourth century for Coromandel and a timely return to form, more than doubling his season aggregate in the process. Sam's score was a personal highest for Coromandel, falling just 13 runs short of possibly becoming the youngest at Coromandel to score a century. Daniel Jenkinson (winner of the Jack Hewett Award for 2004/05), continued his season of consistency with an unbeaten half century as the target was comfortably attained for the loss of only three wickets. Juniors end season with a win.

In a battle for 5th and 6th positions on the junior premiership table, the Coromandel Under-15s completed an easy win scoring 7/220 from their 30 overs and then bundling out ICC Sharks for 62. The match had been (controversially) rescheduled as a one day game as Hewett Oval will be hosting the senior 1st XI's semi-final next week.
Max Cheek, Luke Cuthbertson and Trent Moore all scored 40s: Max was also a star in the field with three catches including a blinder taken at point - described by coach Rowan Lloyd as the "best catch of the season". The bowling honours went to Antony Muggridge with 4/3: the club's best bowling analysis since the commencement of junior cricket four seasons ago.
For the record, ICC already held the dubious honour of having the lowest total against Coromandel: 59 in 2003. Full scores

Six Fours from an over.

Young Nick Wark continues his rapid rise to fame. After a half-century from 41 balls for the 3rd XI at Paringa Park last week, he continued to torment the Plympton bowlers: this time for the under-15s at Plympton Oval. The junior captain smashed six fours off an over, reaching 51 from only 34 balls. It was a good thing for the bowlers (and for uninsured nearby residents) that South Central Junior Cricket Association rules required Nick to retire when he reached the land-mark.
In pursuit of Plympton's 9/137, Coromandel finished on 9/205 in an even team batting performance. The win retains the side's slim chance of securing a place in the grand final. Full scores

Three CCC stars in Under-21 Inter-Association match.

In the latest Adelaide & Suburban Inter-association matches against Para Districts, Coromandel had a total of four representatives.
Russell King was again selected for the senior XI: Russell has been a regular participant in inter-association matches since 1995.
In the Under-21 match: Sam Cheek, Chris Garth and Simon Leek each made their debut for the A&SCA side. This equals the record for the most representatives from Coromandel in an interassociation match.
First year player Gareth Bruce was also selected in the Under-21 side, but was forced to withdraw through injury.
Determined to better brother Max's impressive debut for the South Central Junior Association, Sam starred with the bat scoring 48 in A&SCA's innings.

Scores from round 7.

It was an easy win for the first XI over struggling South Road at Hewett Oval.
Batting first, South Road were bowled out for 61 - the lowest total by South Road against Coromandel in section one for 25 years. Daniel Jenkinson, Tristan Graham and Mark Eglinton each took three wickets. Russell King and Sam Cheek then easily polished off the required runs in only 14 overs, King finding some form (at long last) with an unbeaten 45 from 42 balls, and Cheek scoring 13 in his 50th match. Darren Coulter enjoyed his 100th match for the club taking a catch in South Road's innings, but for only the second time in his ten seasons at Coromandel, was not required to bat. The win is Coromandel's fourth consecutive victory against South Road at the highest level.
The last rites were applied so early, that Darren and Sam Cheek were able to travel to Manson Oval to watch young Max play an important role in the 5th team's gripping four run win against South Road IV.
After captain Rowan Lloyd lost the toss, Coromandel batted first and at one stage were 7/79, before an unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 43 between Max Cheek (22 not out) and rising star Dane Winra (57 not out) enabled a competitive target to be set. Dane and Max also maintained an excellent line and length during the final overs of South Road's innings as the home side fought back after the visitors had reached 68 without loss just before drinks. Jarrod McCauley initiated the fightback trapping Coromandel nemesis John "the rock" Wood Leg Before Wicket, then finishing with 3/25.
The 2nd XI endured the long drive to Pennington to play new club Rosewater. The match started well, with Mike Maclean belting 44 runs from only 27 deliveries to maintain his season strike-rate of over 100. However, when he was dismissed with the score at 3/61 in the eleventh over, the innings fell apart, the team eventually bowled out for 134 in the 32nd over.
Rosewater surpassed the total in the 23rd over, but not before Chris Garth produced a devastating spell of bowling. After conceding 25 runs from his first three overs, Chris then took 6/6 from 25 balls, including an unbelievable one-handed reflex catch, as Rosewater crashed fom 0/39 to 7/72, giving the penguin-heads a chance of victory. It was Garth's second six-wicket haul this season, and despite scoring an unbeaten eight runs with the bat, Chris is still the only current player to have taken more wickets than runs scored in his 47 match career with Coromandel. Career best for "Egg" as Magarey-Benson shield secured for another year.

Former 1st XI captain Mark Eglinton proved a reliable fill-in for Rowan Lloyd's 5th XI as he scored a career highest 132 to lead the home team in a successful chase of Coromandel Ramblers' total of 259.
The win now gives Coromandel an unbeatable 3-0 lead for the Magarey-Benson shield, with only two matches to be played between the local enemies this season.
The 4th XI, led by Graham Gallasch, were narrowly beaten by Adelaide Cavaliers II at Blackwood Hill Oval. Several junior players were promoted from the 5th team - Patrick Needham the most successful as he held the batting together with 45 runs then captured 2/25 from 15 overs with the ball. Needham's ninth wicket partnership with Max Cheek (24 not out) helped to push the home team's score beyond 150, but it was not quite enough in a two wicket loss.
At Glenside Oval, a hat-trick to captain Mark Lemmey arrived too late for the 3rd XI as they were easily overtaken by Adelaide Cavaliers. Mark can still be heard giving ball-by-ball descriptions of the feat, having previously taken only nine wickets in 73 matches. No assistance from the fieldsmen was required as all wickets were either bowled or LBW.
At Hewett Oval, Mitchell Hodgkinson's Penguin-Heads destroyed the Westminster OS II batsmen to maintain their position at the top of the Section 2 premiership table. Chasing only 121, Westminster were bowled out for a paltry 39 - their lowest score against Coromandel in any grade. Tristan Graham (3/3) inflicted the early carnage as Grant Wannan (3/19) and Nathan Morelli (2/8) completed the operation.
At Westminster School, Matt Laming's 1st XI completed a comfortable win against Westminster OS after scoring 297 on the first day. The score was set up with a fourth wicket partnership of 106 between Russell King (89) and Andrew Langmaid (75 - his highest score batting at no.5) and a sixth wicket stand of 59 between Sam Cheek (28) and Langmaid.
In reply Westminster collapsed from 3/136 to be bowled out for 199. The bowling honours went to fast bowler Daniel Jenkinson with 4/35, as Sam Cheek cleaned up the tail with 3/18 from six overs to complete a fine allround performance. Not quite 17 years of age, Sam has settled in admirably in his first season at the highest level. Full Scores

Premiership for the Hunter XI

An unbroken partnership of 66 between Greg Kearsley (34*) and (captain) Richard Hunter (30*) has rescued the home team from potential disaster at 4/38. The last two hours were played in increasingly heavy rain and poor light, play eventually abandoned at 4:29pm with Coromandel declared the winner after they finished higher on premiership table (1st) than Sheidow Park (2nd) after the minor round.
The win was particularly satisfying for life members Peter Zacpal, Richard Hunter and Mike Matthews - each playing in their first premiership after 34, 27 and 18 seasons respectively for the club. Final Score

20th March
6/19: The "Silver fox" leads the "spatchcocks" to the grand-final.

An immaculate display of line and length bowling from the 332 game veteran Peter Zacpal has mesmerised the Plympton Footballers batsmen in the third XI's semi-final at Blackwood Hill Oval.
After belting Coromandel III for 415 at Paringa Park Primary School six weeks ago, Plympton failed to adjust to the wide expanses of Blackwood Hill Oval. Their paltry total of 49 is the lowest ever in finals matches involving Coromandel, and Plympton's lowest all-time score against Coromandel.
Already the holder of many bowling records at Coromandel, "Zac" now shares the honours with Matt Laming for the best bowling analysis in a final, equalling Matt's 6/19 in the 4th XI's Grand Final against Belair two years ago.
Coromandel made light work of the chase, reaching the target in the 16th over: the match less than three hours old. With the score 6/132 at stumps, Plympton conceded defeat and Coromandel III advanced to its first grand-final since the premiership win of 1989/90.
At Hewett Oval, the first XI will need to shatter many all-time records, if they are to experience their own grand-final action this season.
After the coin landed incorrectly for captain Mark Eglinton (for the tenth time this season) Keswick elected to bat first and then proceeded to amass a huge total of 7/352: the highest score ever in finals matches involving Coromandel. The home side will certainly challenge the target: Coromandel scored 8/381 against Keswick at the same venue two seasons ago. Full Scores

First Outright win ever!

Coromandel has secured its first outright win ever against Plympton Footballers in section one.
The second day's was dominated by the individual efforts of Russell King, who took five wickets and scored 50 off 25 balls, and wicket-keeper Adrian Rowles who took five catches to carry his match tally to nine. Paul Magarey also scored an unbeaten half century, in an opening partnership with King of 88 runs in only nine overs, as Coromandel reached their target of 159 in the 21st over.
At Blackwood Hill oval, David Magarey reached his first century for Coromandel as the 3rd XI ensured their unbeaten run continued until Christmas. Full Scores

Coromandel gives the Footballers a hiding

After the disappointment of last week's loss, the 1st XI have taken only one week to rediscover the winning formula, dismissing Plympton Footballers for 109 at Plympton Oval and collecting the six first innings points. Wickets were shared amongst the bowlers, with wicket-keeper Adrian Rowles taking four catches. In reply: a middle order collapse saw Coromandel strugging at 5/55 before captain Mark Eglinton (30) and Tristan Graham (49 not out) combined to destroy the Plympton bowling with a partnership of 78 runs from only 47 balls.
At the home of Coromandel cricket, the 2nd XI were unable to emulate the success of the 1st XI, bowled out for 140 against Plympton Footballers II. It was left to the captain Mitchell Hodgkinson (30 not out), and the experienced Andrew Magarey (51) to show some resistance. Furthermore, Andrew passed the career milestone of 4500 runs. Finally, a special mention for Sam Cheek, scoring 24 runs on the eve of his 16th birthday.
Richard Hunter's 3rd XI are favourites to extend their winning streak to six, after toiling hard all day to restrict South Road III to a mediocre total of 150 at Blackwood Hill Oval. Jarrod McCauley and Greg Kearsley continued their fine form with the ball, each taking three wickets.
After a long trip down south to Woodcroft primary school, the 4th XI struggled with the bat against Woodcroft II. Captain Graham Gallasch played a lone hand with 79 as his side finished with 167. Debutant Tom Anderson scored a quick 17, while Jai Jones battled hard for 15.
After enduring an even longer road trip to the North Haven Football Club: the 5th XI, captained by Jarrad Sim, are in trouble in their match against North Haven IV. Chasing 198 to win Coromandel are 4/40, but despite the score, not out batsman Stuart Norman is confident of his team's chances. Stuart finished with the best bowling figures (4/45) in North Haven's innings, while under-15 player Wynn Hearne also collected three wickets. Full Scores

Six of the Best: "Bevo" teaches the Old Scholars a cricketing lesson

Led by a career best 6/67 from John Beverley, the "penguin-heads" have risen from obscurity to equal fourth on the section two premiership table with a comfortable win over Westminster Old Scholars at Westminster School.
Beverley's controlled line and length swing bowling was too much for the batsmen, who found the required rate of five runs an over insurmountable after Nathan Morelli (2/29) who picked up two early wickets amid some tight bowling. The bowlers were well backed up by a flawless ground-fielding exhibition on a fast outfield, led by the ever-reliable Andrew Magarey and complemented with a right-hand reflex catch by Mark Wicks at first slip. It was the perfect captaincy debut for stand-in skipper Ben Eames, who finished with two late wickets.
In other matches:
The 1st XI remain unbeaten, despite a scare against ICC Sharks at Hewett Oval.
Chasing 182 to win, a middle order collapse saw the score fall from 2/148 to 6/158 before Matt Laming, making his debut at the highest level, scored an unbeaten 22 to see the team home to another win. Paul Magarey led the top-order batting with 42 and Darren Cheek scored another brisk 40.
The "spatchcocks" have extended their unbeaten run to four after an easy win against Keswick IV at Seaview Primary School. Another lazy wicket five wicket haul (his 31st) from Peter Zacpal led the way with Jarrod McCauley and Stuart Norman claiming two each.
The 4th team, led by Graham Gallasch, broke through for their first win of the season, easily accounting for a struggling Kenilworth at Blackwood Hill Oval. Simon Leek demonstrated his allround qualities taking five wickets, while the captain cleaned up the tail to finish with the tidy figures of 3/3.
At Ascot Park Primary School the 5th XI, led by Rowan Lloyd, fell tantalisingly short of victory against South Road IV. Defending 153, the home side limped to 159 and the story may have been different had Coromandel not been hampered with only 10 fieldsman. On a sentimental note, Rowan Lloyd claimed 3/9 to pass the 150 wicket milestone, having made his debut for the club in 1974. The future continues to look promising for Coromandel following a notable senior debut from 14 year old Dane Winra who opened the bowling and finished with 3/21, backing up his efforts in the field with four catches: all taken at mid wicket. At Seaview Primary School, a 94 run partnership between Greg Kearsley (77) and Mark Lemmey (37) set up a competitive total of 217 in their match against Keswick IV.
Bruce "Henry" Carpenter has scored yet another "not out", scoring an unbeaten 70 against Kenilworth III at Blackwood Hill Oval. The 4th XI's score of 8/243 was given great assistance from an unbroken ninth wicket partnership of 63 between Henry and Jai Jones (29*).
With a side containing many players from the under-15 grade, the 5th XI gave a good account of themselves against South Road IV at Ascot Park Primary School. Coromandel scored 153 with John Phillips (44) and debutant Matt Fettke (37*) leading the run-scorers. Full Scores

First outright win for eight years

The Coromandel first XI have completed their first outright win since October 14th 1995.
Led by a match haul of eight wickets by Jeremy McCormick, his first match for eighteen months, the result was rarely in doubt against an under-strength Mitchell Park. Set 86 to win, Paul Magarey completed the task with an unbeaten 42. Mitchell Park's first innings total of 76 is their lowest ever against Coromandel.
At Hewett Oval, a fourth wicket partnership of 98 between Graham Gallasch (48) and Sam Cheek (44) was not enough for Mitchell Hodgkinson's "penguin heads" to chase the target of 221 in their match against Sheidow Park. It was Graham's first match for the second XI since 1998 and Sam's first match at this level.
At Blackwood Hill Oval, an unbeaten 69 from Greg Kearsley led the way for the "Spatchcocks" as they successfully chased the target of 151 set by St George II. An unbroken ninth wicket partnership between Kearsley and Peter Zacpal saw the team home after the eighth wicket fell at 117. Zac's unbeaten 25 was very satisfying for the 322 game veteran against a bowling attack keen to provide advice on how to hold the bat. Brimming with confidence, Zac has now set his sights on surpassing his total of 199 runs scored last season. Full Scores

Henry saves E Grade, as "Craigy" destroys South Road bowling

In a line-up comprising largely of juniors, it was the older brigage that played the major role on the first day of the E Grade's grand-final against South Road IV at Hewett Oval.
After captain Peter Craig won the toss and elected to bat, he would not have enjoyed the first hour of the innings. After a rare failure of the Leek-Oakey opening partnership, Sam Cheek was spectacularly caught at first slip for 11, leaving the innings in dire trouble at 3/25.
Bruce "Henry" Carpenter was joined by Graham Gallasch and they proceeded to steer the match to calmer waters, guiding the innings safely through to drinks without further loss. The score had progressed to a more respectable 85 before Gallasch was well caught at mid off for 23. In true tradition, Henry was very circumspect early on, reaching double figures after 72 minutes at the crease. However, he outscored Graham by one run during their 60 run partnership.
The match was evenly poised with the score 4/98 at tea. However upon resumption, a middle-order collapse of 3/7 from 18 balls left the score at 7/106 when the captain strode to the crease. With 30 of the allotted 75 overs remaining, another steadying partnership was required. What followed had to be seen to be believed and was a reward for the spectators who were there to witness it. After a cautious start by Craig, he unleashed a barrage of boundaries that included three sixes, highlighted by a powerful flat hit over square leg towards the netball courts and a towering blow over mid-wicket that landed well over Coromandel Parade after the bowler had unwisely tested him out with a short ball. Despite giving Henry a 140 minute head-start, he overtook Henry's score after batting for only an hour.
When Peter skied a ball into the wicket-keeper's gloves, he was dismissed for a magnificient 72 from only 84 deliveries. The partnership of 115 in 101 minutes had turned the match; a record for the eighth wicket in E grade matches and fourth highest over all grades since 1945. Henry's unbeaten 77 contained the usual mixture of pre-meditated "dead-bat" defensive shots and signature cut shots, playing between the "V" early on and attacking the off-side boundary with greater regularity as his innings progressed. He reached his half-century in just over three hours and from 163 balls. In contrast, Craig reached his 50 under the hour and from only 59 balls.
In the twilight of his career, it has been a courageous season for Carpenter, experiencing back complaints for most of the season. Following his century last week, he has now amassed an incredible 182 runs for the finals series, without being dismissed! This is the second highest such aggregate, behind Kym Knuckey's 215 (121 & 94 not out) for the A Grade in the 1990 finals. Full Scores

Off to the Grand Final - the triumphant E Grade

23rd March
E Grade storm into Grand Final as D Grade fall tantalisingly short.

After dominating the first day, it was a mere formality for the E Grade to reach the Section VII Grand Final, completing an easy win against Westminster OS IV at Hewett Oval. A second innings fightback was always well out of reach of their opponents, following a century from Bruce "Henry" Carpenter. Resuming at 4/110, Henry lost three partners before he found a competent ally in Daniel Hosking and their unbeaten partnership of 58 saw Henry safely home for his second hundred at Coromandel.
Peter Craig's young team will now play South Road IV, a team they have beaten in two previous encounters this season.
No formalities for the D Grade at Edwardstown Oval however, a heart-breaking one wicket loss to South Road III in a nail-biting semi-final.
Resuming at 4/26, a confident appeal for caught behind from the first ball of the day was turned down and subsequently wickets were difficult to gain. The breakthrough finally arrived after nearly an hour's play, following an athletic piece of fielding by Matt Laming. After an enormous effort to chase the ball down to the long on boundary, his throw to bowler Tristan Graham found the batsman short of his ground, after an attempt for a third run had been made. The game then swung Coromandel's way, the ensuing collapse leaving the score at 7/65 when the first drinks break was taken. A partnership of 43 for the eighth wicket was broken when a miscued pullshot from the bowling of Paul "Zulu" Besanko presented an easy catch for Tom Van Schaik at square leg. Zulu had been recently re-introduced into the attack, replacing Tristan Graham after 28 consecutive overs at the Southern End.
With only 13 runs to defend, a series of edges over the slips cordon allowed South Road to move within one of the target of 121, before re-invented off-spinner Jarrad Sim manufactured a wicket after a miscued cover drive found the safe hands of Laming at point. The tension reached a crescendo as a centre wicket mixup almost resulted in a run-out before a miscued cover drive just cleared the outstretched left hand of Stuart Norman at mid off. Full Scores

Sam Cheek leads E Grade towards Grand-Final as Matt Laming breaks all-time club record.

A tremendous allround performance by Sam Cheek has almost certainly booked a place for the Coromandel E Grade in the Section VII grand-final, on the first day of their match against Westminster OS IV at Hewett Oval. Taking the new ball, Sam's five wicket haul, together with Peter Craig's miserly bowling at the other end, restricted their opponents to a meagre score of 59.
In reply, the home side have already completed a first innings win, Cheek (32) and Bruce Carpenter (39*) leading the way with a fourth wicket partnership of 74.
The D Grade have once again been rescued by Matt Laming, this time in their Semi-Final against South Road III at Edwardstown Oval. Matt is the 12th batsman at Coromandel (since 1947) to carry his bat through a completed innings, and the first since Andrew Langmaid in 1998. His unbeaten 64 is also the highest individual total without a boundary, passing Chris Wallace's 59, scored five years ago at Hewett Oval, also in a semi-final. Matt did his best to avoid breaking this record, unleashing several lofted on-drives, only to see the ball slow down on a lush outfield near the boundary.
Despite Matt's efforts, the team struggled for a first innings total of 121. Matt was possibly responsible for two run-outs, the second that of Adrian Rowles. "Rowdy"'s bad luck in season 2002/03 continues: after Laming called for a quick single, a throw to the wicket-keeper found the batsman short of his ground. However it appeared the bails were dislodged without the ball being controlled in the 'keeper's gloves, an incident obscured from the view of the square leg umpire.
Matt then opened the bowling with Tristan Graham, and soon had the South Road innings in shambles at 4/17 after Tristan took three wickets from 11 fiery overs.
For the record, Matt spent the entire day's play on the ground, a total of four hours and 52 minutes. It was a phenomenal display of endurance, the type of Herculean effort that Mark Lemmey's team will need to produce on Sunday as the players are expected to be nursing sore heads following tonight's pre-matrimonial celebrations for the captain. "D"s and "E"s march into Finals.

Mark Lemmey's D Grade and Peter Craig E Grade have completed comfortably wins to earn places in the Section Six and Seven finals respectively.
At Glenside Oval, the D Grade exacted revenge over arch rival Adelaide Cavaliers II, following a mighty allround performance by eventual Jack Hewett Award winner, Matt Laming. Matt's unbeaten 86 on the first day allowed the team to post a competitive score of 6/189, a target which was never in sight after Matt took the new ball and sparked a devastating collapse to leave the home team in disarray at 8/32. His figures of 7/45 are the 10th best in D Grade matches and the best for Coromandel against Adelaide Cavaliers in any grade. The fiery exhibition also included his 50th wicket for Coromandel (all in D Grade), taken in only his 15th match, earning a place in history as the equal second fastest to the milestone. Furthermore, the team total of 75 is the lowest by the Adelaide Cavaliers club against Coromandel.
Defending a score of 196 the previous week, the Coromandel E Grade endured a painfully slow batting exhibition by South Road at Manson Oval. Batting all day throughout the maximum 60 overs, their opponents managed just 113 runs for the loss of nine wickets. The wickets were shared amongst the bowlers, Sam Cheek bowling unchanged for 15 overs, for figures of 1/23.
A nine wicket haul by Daniel Jenkinson was the catalyst for a crushing victory by the First XI over Warradale at Hewett Oval. The win has lifted the A Grade from the bottom of the Section One Premiership Table, ensuring that the club is still without a wooden spoon in the highest grade of the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association.
"Jinko"'s figures of 9/56 are the fourth best in A Grade matches since Coromandel first competed in Adelaide & Suburban in 1938, and were taken just over 24 years to the day, after Bob Hopkins returned the best ever A Grade analysis (in this association) of 9/32 against Plympton Footballers at Blackwood Hill Oval. Spearheading the attack and bowling unchanged throughout the innings for 23.4 overs, he continued to trouble the batsmen with sheer pace, still unleashing thunderbolts after nearly three hours at the bowling crease.
Just for the record, Daniel was involved in all 10 dismissals for the innings. After capturing the first seven wickets, he accepted an easy chance off the bowling off Simon Cheers at cover, denying himself a chance at the rare feat of 10 wickets: a true team man!
At Brighton High School, the B Grade crashed to inevitable outright defeat against Warradale II. The only ray of hope came from Nathan Morelli who, after a promotion in the batting order to No.8, unleased a previously unseen array of shots. He was particularly damaging against the spinners and scored a brisk 22 runs. It has taken Nathan nine matches to score his first runs for the club, and in doing so has removed his name from the More Wickets Than Runs page. Full Scores

Grand Final evenly poised.

The Under 15s grand final is evenly balanced after an exciting first day's play against Sheidow Park Maroon at Sheidow Park Primary School.
Captain Jai Jones called incorrectly at the toss and his side was asked to field first and at 3/169 in the 36th over, the home team were threatening a score of over 250, finding the boundary regularly on the small outfield.
A fightback was required, and once again Ryan Murray was the destroyer of the innings, taking 4/21 from four overs and triggering a collapse which saw the score reduced to 7/180 before Sheidow Park rallied to reach 9/223 after their full 50 overs.
On a recently cut, partially uneven outfield, Coromandel displayed a fine fielding exhibition, the pressure resulting in both openers being run-out. Highlights include Michael Magarey (intercepting a pull shot at mid wicket and releasing a perfect throw to Sam Cheek at the bowler's end, running out Sheidow Park dangerman Brad Young for 34), Chris Moulton (a one-handed running catch at deep mid off), Matthew Moulton (a fine low catch at Deep Mid Wicket) and Jai Jones (two catches in the gully). Sensational "Stuey" stars in A Grade fightback.

A magnificent 111 from the bat of Stuart Campbell has lifted an under-strength A Grade from an early batting collapse to post an commanding total of 274 on the first day of their match against Warradale at Hewett Oval. The century milestone was reached in a mere 124 deliveries, the second 50 completed from an astounding 23 balls. Stuart was given good support from Alan "Michael" Cheek who scored his maiden half century for Coromandel, their partnership of 90 for the sixth wicket setting up a competitive score of 274. Grand Final for the Under 15s?

Needing a win to have a chance of competing in the final next week, Coromandel's Under 15 team defeated Adelaide by four wickets at Park 23, West Terrace.
A 30 over a side one day match was played, after the first day was abandoned last week following overnight rain. Captain Jai Jones won the toss and had no hesitation in sending in Adelaide on a "green" wicket. His bowlers then restricted Adelaide to 6/104 from their 30 overs. In reply, Coromandel were in early trouble at 3/23 before Ashleigh Chambers (31) and Sam Cheek (23) combined for a 52 run partnership off 50 balls to steer their team towards victory.
Star of the match was Ryan Murray, who followed up his career best bowling of 2/4 off three overs, with his highest score for the club, an unbeaten 20 off 25 balls.
The players now endure a nervous wait for confirmation of their historic grand final berth which still hinges on results from other matches. Full Score

First XI falls to the bottom after another dark day for our once mighty club

Coromandel has fallen to the bottom of the Section One premiership table after losing outright to Morphettville Park at Hewett Oval.
The B Grade is running out of chances to make the semi-finals in Section Two after losing easily to Panorama by seven wickets at Clapham Primary School. A disappointing total of 142 was dominated by a brilliant career best 93 from only 115 balls by John Beverley.
At Foxfield Oval, the C Grade were an unsettled side from the moment captain Richard Hunter was unable to take his place in the side. Stand-in captain Peter Zacpal produced a fine all-round performance, scoring 73 runs and taking three wickets. However he played a lone hand in another loss, this time to bottom side Hectorville. Zacpal and Rowan Lloyd were the saviours of the innings, recording a partnership of 86 for the seventh wicket. Regular players at Coromandel since the early seventies, this was the first match the two had played together since 31st October 1992.
After rocketing to top position following two outright wins since Christmas, Mark Lemmey's D Grade looked anything but premiership contenders in a crushing annihilation at the hands of South Road at Blackwood Hill Oval.
Bowled out for 58 in the first week (equal 20th lowest in D Grade history and the lowest during Lemmey's reign as captain), they commenced the day trailing by 72 runs on the first innings, the captain still harbouring thoughts of an unlikely outright win. However records were meant to be broken, the team exceeded their efforts of the first innings and were bowled out for 51, only Lemmey succeeded in reaching double figures. The combined total over the two completed innings (109) is the sixth lowest in D Grade matches at Coromandel: the record is 87. Many other dubious records were broken during the match, the statistician will provide details in due course.
Peter Craig's E Grade continue to hold the club up in Section Seven. A win over North Haven has almost assured the young team will compete in the Section Seven finals, if so it would be the first time an E Grade side has done so.
For many of the players in the team, travelling to North Haven would have been a new experience and they made the most of the opportunity, bowling the opposition out for 188: an innings which included an individual century. Sam Cheek opened the bowling and took three wickets while veteran Graham Gallasch cleaned up the tail with 4/3. In reply, Simon Leek (43) and Cheek (65) added 80 runs for the third wicket and Bruce "Henry" Carpenter (66) and Ashleigh Chambers (31) 82 for the fifth wicket as the target was reached for the loss of only four wickets. 700 wickets for the Silver Fox, as "Spatchcocks" strengthen charge towards finals

The Wily veteran Peter Zacpal, committed club man at Coromandel for more than 30 years, claimed his 700th wicket for Coromandel on Saturday. Beginning the day on 697 wickets, the milestone was sealed with the assistance of captain Richard Hunter (a team-mate in 83 of his 318 matches) who completed a fine catch at mid on. "Zac" has joined an elite group, becoming only the third player to reach this milestone in recorded history at Coromandel Cricket Club.
Opening the attack from the Eastern end and bowling unchanged throughout his maximum allotted 15 overs, Zac's final figures of 4/33 were the catalyst for an accomplished bowling and fielding performance by his team in 40 degree temperature at Blackwood Hill Oval. Dismissing Section Four leader Kenilworth II for a mere 158 has reignited the C Grade's hopes of competing in the finals, for the first time since 1993.

In other matches:
The D Grade continue to rediscover their premiership form from last season.
A blazing hot sun and a northerly wind was no hindrance as Mark Lemmey's team gained a decisive advantage against North Haven III, at the remote rural location of Taperoo Oval at Outer Harbour. After a Matt Laming thunderbolt smashed into the stumps with the first ball of the day it was evident that the batsmen were not going to last long, batting with little patience and giving no respect to a bowling attack that lifted the D Grade to the ultimate prize last year.
Matt continued his consistent season with the ball finishing with figures of 3/36, collecting points to take the lead in the quest for the Jack Hewett Award. However the honours for the day went to the quiet achiever Tristan Graham, whose 6/25 are the second best figures in the history of D Grade Cricket for Coromandel against North Haven. The task for the bowlers was once again made easier with the customary collection of "screamers" in the field - not least the sensational running, diving, one-handed heart-stopper taken by Bill Mulders.
In reply to North Haven's total of 82 (from 20 overs), it seemed reckless batting had become contagious as Coromandel lost two wickets in the first over and soon after collapsed to be 4/16. However, further damage was averted through sound batting from captain Lemmey (19) and an unbroken partnership of 40 between Jarrad Sim (27*) and Mulders (18*) as the total reached 6/93 by stumps and the team collected the six points for a first innings win.

The B Grade, in fourth position on the Section Two Premiership Table, are locked in a crucial game against fifth placed Keswick II, with both teams level on points and separated on quotient by only 0.08.
Batting first, the "Penguin-Heads" may have wasted an opportunity to cement their place in the top four, falling from a position of strength at 2/109 to be bowled out for 164 at Hewett Oval. Stuart Campbell scored 51, his fifth half-century for the club, and John Beverley 45 as they combined for a third wicket partnership of 73 from only 110 deliveries.

It was an otherwise anti-climatic start to round 8, the first day's play abandoned in the other two matches. The A Grade's match against Keswick at Adelaide High School was cancelled due to high temperatures and the E Grade's Magarey-Benson "dead rubber" against Coromandel Ramblers IV was abandoned because of the poor condition of the ground. Coromandel fails in Grand Final Replay.

At Hewett Oval, Coromandel has failed to revenge its Grand Final loss to Western Youth Centre last season.
Defending only 148 was always going to be difficult. Scott Reid captured a wicket with only his third ball for the club and finished with 3/36. Captain Mark Eglinton also took 3 wickets, unfortunately after the target had been reached.
Coromandel is yet to beat Western Youth Centre at A Grade level in five attempts.

In the other game of the CCC vs WYC double-header, Mitchell Hodgkinson's "Penguin-Heads" completed their fifth win for the season at Western Youth Centre.
Aspiring life-member Mark Wicks led the way with 83, his highest score for the season and sixth highest in an illustrious 148 match career at Coromandel. "Wicksy" was deservedly named as the "Quik Stix" player of the match. Chasing 202 to win, a partnership of 127 between Wicks and Grant Wannan (54*) rescued the side from early trouble at 3/55 and a blistering cameo innings of 27 runs off 13 balls from the blade of "Junior" Zacpal ensured the win.

At The Hill, Richard Hunter's C Grade celebrated their first win since round one. Reaching the required target of 115 was an easy task after Mike Maclean built the foundation for the innings with 43 and David Magarey, playing as a specialist batsman, scored his first half century for the club. Such was the confidence the bowlers had over the Warradale batsmen, the "Spatchcocks" pushed for outright victory. Another lazy five wicket haul from Peter Zacpal moved his career total to 697 and Chris Lay's fiery 4/62 exemplified the benefit of having a quick bowler in the team. Full Scores

Coromandel retains Magarey-Benson shield - despite 1st XI demise.

With only one match to play, Coromandel has secured an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the battle with Coromandel Ramblers for the local trophy. The club is assured of retaining the Magarey-Benson shield for 2002/03 by virtue of being the holders of the shield at the commencement of the season. A win to the B Grade and loss for the A Grade over the weekend, together with the E Grade's win from round four, comprising the 2-1 scoreline.
At Hawthorndene Oval, the A Grade wasted an opportunity to move into semi-final contention before Christmas. An opening stand of 50, in only 13 overs between Paul Magarey (45) and Mark Wicks, and a fine unbeaten innings of 76 from the club President were not enough to complete a win against the local enemy.
At Hewett Oval and ably led by Mitchell Hodgkinson, the B Grade cruised to an easy five wicket win over Coromandel Ramblers II. John Beverley sent a message to the A Grade selectors with an unbeaten 69 and "Junior" Zacpal scored 35 not out in an unbeaten partnership of 59. The "Penguin Heads" now move into fourth position on the Section 2 premiership table.
For the C Grade at Capella Road Reserve in their match against Sheidow Park II, there is nothing much to report. No bowler was able to claim a wicket: Andrew Ferguson's arm, after an athletic chase to fine leg, resulting in the only wicket for the day.
Mark Lemmey's D Grade have lifted themselves from the bottom of the ladder with an easy win over Mitchell Park at Blackwood Hill Oval. Three wickets each to Matt Laming, part-time D Grade player Tim Hanna and, for one week only, Chris Lay.
Defending 261 is rarely a difficult task, and for the E Grade at Kenilworth No. 2 oval, this was no exception. After Kenilworth resumed at 10 without loss, a wicket to Sam Cheek from the first ball of the day was followed by a collapse leaving the home team at 4/33. It was a position from which they never recovered, a declaration at 7/118 handing an easy win for Peter Craig's team. Prepared to try anything, young Sam took the gloves later in the day and effected a stumping off the bowling off mystery spinner Jai Jones. The wickets were shared between the bowlers, including first game player Ashleigh Chambers. The E Grade are now equal second position on the premiership table, nine points ahead of fifth. Five losses for the first time since 1983.

A disastrous round for the almighty Coromandel - all five teams beaten.
During the post-match presentations commiserations at the Blackwood RSL on Saturday evening, many of the experienced members of the club were asking "is this the first time Coromandel had lost five out of five in one round?"
Fortunately (or is unfortunately?) the answer is a resounding No! There have been four previous occasions: two in each of seasons 1981/82 and 1982/83. Furthermore in Round 1 of 1981/82, (the very first round in which Coromandel fielded five teams) both the C and E Grade lost outright: today's debacle does not quite rank as the darkest in the club's six year history with five teams. Tough day in the sun for the bowlers.

At the home of cricket, the Coromandel first XI were asked to field first by the visiting Glenelg ANA XI and what followed was to become the culmination of a dark day for the Coromandel Cricket Club. After an opening stand of 169 in only 29 overs, both openers eventually scored centuries as the visitors reached a total of 8/397 off the full 75 overs. The score is a record against Coromandel, over all grades, at least since 1947/48.
The bowling honours went to all-rounder John Beverley who collected four of the last five wickets. The strong A Grade batting line-up will be presented with its toughest task next week, required to score at a rate of 5.3 runs per over.

It was Mitchell Hodgkinson's team that was to endure the road-trip to Largs North this week. As with the C Grade the previous week, it was an even longer journey home as North Haven recorded the highest score against the Coromandel B Grade since Sheidow Park scored 295 in the Scott Reid exhibition at Hewett Oval on the 18th November 2000. Chris Garth improved his chance of defending his Jack Hewett trophy by taking three wickets.

After losing the toss and being "inserted" into the Blackwood Hill Oval, Richard Hunter's C Grade were on top early after some tight bowling from Greg Kearsley and Thomas Bird restricted Panorama II to 2/20 after 14 overs. However through some adventurous batting from the middle order saw the game slip from the home team's grasp as the total reached a formidable 264 after 60 overs. The fieldsmen did not help their cause by dropping over ten catches - three by the usually reliable Andrew Ferguson. "Fergie" made amends later completing a great catch on the midwicket boundary to dismiss the Panorama centurion. "T-Bird" took 2/50 off his maximum 15 overs in his best bowling performance for the season.

The D Grade travelled to Seaview High School to play Morphettville Park III, in desperate need of a win after having fallen to the bottom of the Section VI premiership table last week, and scored 137 with captain Mark Lemmey continuing his consistent season top scoring with 41.

At the Manson Oval, captain Peter Craig won the toss and gave his young E Grade team the use of ideal conditions for batting in their match against Westminster OS IV. After being in trouble early at 5/47, Graham Gallasch (51) and Tom Craig (59) produced a record sixth wicket partnership, in E Grade matches, of 108. A respectable score of 199 was reached in the end, and special mention must be made for under-15 player Jai Jones who responded to verbal taunts from the opposition to make an important contribution to a last wicket partnership of 31 with his captain. Coromandel Takes Early Lead in Battle for the Local Prize.

Coromandel Cricket Club has taken an early lead over local enemy Coromandel Ramblers in the contest for the Magarey-Benson Shield as the E Grade ventured to Weymouth Oval to take on the Ramblers' D Grade in the first match for the coveted trophy in 2002/03. After the Coromandel Ramblers' batsmen had earlier threatened to amass a huge score, the bowlers fought back to restrict the home team to a score of 178 from the full allotment of 40 overs. The fightback was led by leg-spinner Jai Jones, who put in another impressive performance dismissing three top order batsmen, and completed by Rowan Lloyd who cleaned up the tail with 3/13.
In reply, the Opening combination of Rahsaan Oakey (49) and Simon Leek (42) again gave the team a solid start, contributing 74 for the first wicket. However a middle order collapse soon saw the team in trouble at 7/103 after Ramblers' veteran David Neil claimed a hat-trick. When a captain's innings was required, Peter Craig scored a One Day, E Grade record score of 59 not out as his team completed a two wicket win.

Today's games were part of the first round of One Day Matches played in the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association since 4th December 1999.
In other matches:
At Hewett Oval, Coromandel fielded first against Westminster OS and Paul Magarey led the way with three wickets as Mark Eglinton's XI restricted Westminster to a moderate 129. It was an excellent fielding effort with nine of the dismissals resulting from catches - three to the safe hands of Andrew Magarey. In reply, Tim Hanna accelerated the run-chase with a rapid 40 and Andy Magarey consolidated with an unbeaten 41 to see the first XI home by five wickets.

Mitchell Hodgkinson's B Grade travelled to the new home ground of Sheidow Park at Capella Road Reserve. After receiving a last-minute promotion from the C Grade, Ken Rowe smashed a career highest score of 106 - an all-time record in One Day matches for Coromandel at B Grade level. Defending a score of 177, Nick Raymond destroyed the Sheidow Park batting with a career-best 6/23. The "penguin-heads" are now equal top on the premiership table - separated from top position by quotient only.

Richard Hunter's "spatchcocks" endured the traditional "water bag" trip to Largs North to play North Haven II. The old adage of "not enough runs" returned to haunt the C Grade: after losing both openers without a run on the board they collapsed to be 9/59 in the 29th over, before making a minor recovery to be bowled out for 81.
In the field, veterans Greg Kearsley and Peter Zacpal combined to launch a courageous fightback with the ball, despite the strong pressure applied by the opposing cheer squad. Assisted by some spectacular catching in the infield, they had the home side struggling at 8/54 before an unbroken ninth wicket stand left the captain wondering "if only we had scored more runs ...".

The D Grade may have set a new record in late-finishing matches, completing their match at 7pm at Blackwood Hill Oval. Full Scores

The A and B Grade played against the Plympton Footballers A and B Grade repectively. The matches are the 99th and 100th played by Coromandel against Plympton.
At Plympton Oval, Darren Coulter's 62 rescued the A Grade from a precarious 4/59 and enabled Mark Eglinton's team to reach a respectable score of 208.
At Hewett Oval, Stuart Campbell scored his 1000th run for the club, and Nick Raymond provided some late-order hitting with a brisk 48 as the B Grade matched the first XI's score of 208.
An unbeaten 41 on debut by young Tyler Harman and a swash-buckling 27 from 16 balls from the blade of Peter Zacpal were the highlights for the C Grade at "Spatchcock Park".
The D Grade have a battle on their hands after being dismissed for 141 at Sheidow Park Primary School, captain Mark Lemmey top-scoring with 38. However a sensational reflex catch by Matthew Bubner at bat-pad provided the inspiration for fightback by the bowlers, the home team 2/45 at stumps.
Consistent individual performances and a record partnership helped the E Grade to a near record score of 9/277 at the Manson Oval. Full Scores

Round 2 results.

Another successful round for the club with three wins out of five, the E Grade leading the way with an easy outright win over South Road at Ascot Park Primary School.
Spearheading the attack was Tom Craig, who collected eight wickets for the match, and Sam Cheek with four wickets in the first innings. Only 21.2 overs were required to bowl the opposition out a second time, Tom bowling unchanged to take 6/15.
In other matches:
The A and B Grade remain undefeated. At Mitchell Park, Darren Cheek captained the first XI in his 200th match for the club and his team-mates helped him celebrate as the team won in a close finish by only 11 runs.
At Hewett Oval, Mitchell Hodgkinson's B Grade easily passed the target set by ICC Sharks the previous week. A fine innings of 76 by Mark Wicks was the backbone of the innings and some later order hitting led by Nick Raymond set up a declaration with a possibility of an outright win.
At Cowandilla Primay School, it was a case of "the one that got away" for the C Grade against Western Youth Centre. Chasing 235 to win, they appeared to be coasting at 3/173, before a late order collapse left the side 14 runs from victory. Ken Rowe scored 85 in his first appearance for the season and Mike Maclean continued his good form from last season with 45.
For the D Grade, the winning streak is over. After restricting the Adelaide Cavaliers top order to 2/25 after 13 overs, the opening bowling combination of Matt Laming and Peter Rathjen continued to bowl well, but without luck.
For the record, Mark Lemmey's XI had won their last eight matches, and the last 10 at Blackwood Hill Oval, before today. Full Scores

For only the second time in the club's history, and the first since 1994/95, Coromandel has opened the season with four wins in round 1.
At Hewett Oval, Daniel Jenkinson's fine all-round effort of 38 runs and four wickets completed a comfortable win for the A Grade over South Road.
Simon Cheers' devastating spell of 6 wickets in 39 balls cleaned up the South Park batting line-up in the South Parklands.
A Simon Johnson half-century has rescued the C Grade from a precarious 4/38 to complete an easy win over Plympton Footballers at Blackwood Hill Oval.
The D Grade, led by innings of 89 by Mark Laming, and 67 from late replacement Scott Rose, won a close game against Western Youth Centre IV at Cowandilla Primary School, the D Grade's first win against this club.
The first game of E Grade cricket at Coromandel since 1986 took place at the new venue of Manson Oval. After being bowled out for 41 on the first day the team never quite recovered, however there were some promising performances from the younger players, particularly Tom Van Schaik and Paul Gallasch. Matt Laming collected three wickets from 13 balls without conceding a run, finishing with the figures of 6/19. Matt's bowling figures break the record (held by Tristan Graham for eight days) for the best bowling in a final by a player from Coromandel.
The early finish to the game presented a chance for the team to travel to Hewett Oval to watch the A Grade in their Grand Final against Western Youth Centre.
A partnership of 123 between Andrew Langmaid (65) and Darren Cheek (97) saw Coromandel reach 2/174 at the tea break. However, upon resumption, Andrew Langmaid pulled a short ball straight to square leg and Darren Cheek failed by only two metres to clear the long-on boundary in an attempt to reach his ninth century. Coromandel then lost their last eight wickets for the addition of only 47 runs, against some tight line and length bowling, to be dismissed for 222 - 31 runs short of victory. Full Scores

Tough task for A Grade

Western Youth Centre remain the archilles' heel of Mark Eglinton's A Grade, scoring 9/253 at Hewett Oval. At one stage Coromandel reduced the visitors to 5/91, but some lusty hitting from the tail has given the home team a tough challenge.
History will be made in more ways than one if Coromandel is able to secure its first flag in 47 years - no side from Coromandel has ever been successful in chasing a target greater than 253 in a final (semi-final or grand-final).
On an individual note, David Magarey claimed his 100th wicket for Coromandel, following a "screamer" from Darren Coulter. David's 100 wickets include 87 taken at the highest level.
Down the road at Blackwood Hill oval, Mark Lemmey's D Grade have fought back after a slow start to gain the upper hand by stumps.
A slick 21 runs from 28 balls from Matt Laming gave Coromandel to a good start, 30 runs for the first wicket, before a collapse saw the side 4/43 after an hour's play. Captain Lemmey (29) then played a responsible innings, well supported by Tristan Graham (25) and Adam Rowe - whose unbeaten 15 from 67 balls was instrumental in ensuring Belair were forced to remain in the field for an hour longer than seemed likely earlier in the day.
Normally, defending 135 would never be easy against a strong batting line-up. However with a four-pronged pace attack, led by a fired-up Tristan Graham (2/23) and the controlled swing bowling of Matt Laming (3/19), the visitors crumbled to 5/49 at stumps - the required 136 a distant dream against a side who have not conceded more than 109 runs in an innings since round 8. Two Grand Finals for Coromandel for the first time since 1989/90.

After setting up an impregnable position on the first day, Coromandel A Grade has completed an easy eight wicket win over Hectorville. Only 11 overs were required on the second day - overnight batsmen Darren Coulter and Darren Cheek remaining unbeaten, both scoring 44.
Mark Eglinton's XI will contest Western Youth Centre next week for a chance to win the club's first section one premiership since 1954/55.
For the D Grade, who had already achieved a first innings lead over Kenilworth, the task was simple: bat all day - until their opponents had had enough. That they did, Jarrad Sim (46) and night-watchman Stuart Norman (6 from 69 balls) ensured that there would be no early collapse, and then Mark Lemmey (31*) and Tristan Graham (73*) demoralised the bowlers with an unbeaten century partnership. Tristan's innings completed a record-breaking batting and bowling performance - the best ever bowling figures in a final for Coromandel, and equal highest score with the bat in D Grade finals. His 73 was completed in under an hour and scored from only 42 deliveries. Full Scores

Two Grand Finals for Coromandel?

Another fine bowling performance has the A Grade in with a chance of their first Grand Final appearance since 1991/92.
Bowling first for only the second time this season, Coromandel dismissed Hectorville for a mere 142, after being 4/125 in the 37th over. David Magarey (2/22) dismissed the openers, Jeremy McCormick (3/50) initiated the lower order collapse and then Mark Eglinton (3/1) cleaned up the tail.
Openers Andrew Langmaid (30) and Adrian Brush (25) provided a solid foundation for the reply, putting on 46 for the first wicket. At 2/95 and with Darren Coulter unbeaten on 33, Coromandel is on target for its first Grand Final, in A Grade, for ten years.
The D Grade have already completed a first innings win over Kenilworth IV in the South Parklands.
After a shaky start with the bat, Peter Rathjen (69) and Mark Lemmey (44) helped to post a competitive total for Coromandel of 170. Tristan Graham (6/31) and Matt Laming (3/32) then destroyed Kenilworth batting line-up, all out for just 73. Tristan's bowling figures are the best in a final by any player from Coromandel. Teams for round 9

A promotion for Kiwi. Mike Maclean is elevated to the A Grade after a very consistent season (so far) in the C Grade. Another to be rewarded with selection in the first team is Paul "Eddie" Champion, making his debut at the highest grade in his 4th season for the club. Eddie's safe hands at gully and powerful strokeplay, with minimal footwork, have not gone unnoticed by the club.
The B Grade take on nemesis Westminster OS at Hewett Oval. Henry's reign as captain is over for the time being, making way for Andrew Magarey, back from a successful stint in the A Grade. Joining Andy in the B Grade is "Michael" Cheek, playing his first game for Coromandel since the C Grade's victorious grand final win in 1989/90.
A large crowd is expected to flock to Blackwood Hill Oval to witness Peter Zacpal play his 300th match for the club, in the C Grade.
In the D Grade, Mark Lemmey's XI continue their assault on the section six premiership. For the moment however, they take on Kenilworth IV in the South Parklands. A win could see the team in second position with two rounds to play.

Magarey Wins Gold

Dave Magarey beat a "high class" field to win Coro's "Olympic Games" night held at the Blackwood Football Club last Saturday evening. In what was a hotly contested competition involving darts, table tennis, 8-ball, putt putt, and carpet bowls, Dave's multi-skills (and clever manipulation of the draw - as chief organiser) eventually saw him to victory. Mark Lemmey performed well throughout the night to finish with silver, and the "Prez", Darren Cheek, was just pipped for third place by Mark Wicks in their contest for bronze. Apart from "Kiwi" deciding not to show up - after a day in the field during which he was apparently unable to hold his "puss" - the other major highlight of the evening would seem to have been Silvana's prowess around the pool table and dart board.

Results from Round 3 - A day of mixed fortunes for Coromandel

The A Grade were so close, yet so far, falling short by one run in a heartbreaking loss to Western Youth Centre at Hewett Oval. The B Grade struggled to take wickets consistently against Mitchell Park and experienced their first defeat for 2000/01. Peter Zacpal and Peter Griffin took 5 and 4 first innings wickets respectively as the C Grade annihilated Sheidow Park on 1st innings. At Ridge Park, the D Grade fell short on first innings, but regrouped to bowl St George out cheaply in the 2nd innings and win comfortably by 8 wickets to record an outright win.

Teams for Round 3

Some interesting team selections this week.
After achieving the career milestone of 1000 runs last week in the B Grade, Darren "Chester" Decesare has continued his miraculous return from injury with a promotion to the A Grade.
After 24 games at the club, Greg Kearsley will spend his first Saturday afternoon at Coromandel in a different team to club stalwart and close mate, Richard Hunter. Hopefully the shock of not hearing Dick sledging the opposition team will not put Kerz off his game too much.
Another long time player Graham "Chum" Carpenter has returned from the Flinders Ranges to provide assistance to the D Grade bowling attack. Click here for full team lists.
